Description

Centre of sheet: half-length study for the central figure of Ahab in the painting 'Jezebel and Ahab' (c.1863, Scarborough Art Gallery). The figure's hand is turned with the palm facing the left while in the finished work the palm rests on the female figure's garments. Left of sheet: study for the upper arm of Ahab. Right of sheet: the left hand, this time positioned exactly like the figure's hand in the finished work.
