Description
Upper left of sheet: two small studies of female figures, possibly for the figure of Iphigenia in the painting 'Cymon and Iphigenia'. Immediately below is a study for the composition of the painting 'Clytie' (c.1892, Fitzwilliam Museum). Upper right of sheet: full-length study of a figure, facing the viewer. Below this is a study for the composition of the painting 'Cymon and Iphigenia', with another similar sketch to the right. To the right of this are two small studies, one above the other, of the two sleeping female figures seen in 'Cymon and Iphigenia'. Below these and running horizontally across the sheet from left to right a study for the composition of the painting 'Idyll', and two for the painting 'Whispers' (labelled "Betrothed"). Below this to the left, is a study for the composition of 'Cymon and Iphigenia', and to the right is a study for the male figure seated on the ground in 'Cymon and Iphigenia'. In this study the body faces the viewer, whereas in the final painting he is seen in profile. At the bottom of the sheet is another study for the composition of 'Cymon and Iphigenia'.
