Description

Study for the female figure and draped seat in the painting 'Solitude' (c.1890, Maryhill Museum of Fine Arts, Washington). This study is very similar to the final painting although the figure's head is inclined slightly to the left and the drapery covering the seat is fuller.

Collection of Mrs Aubrey Herbert [or possibly Evelyn Waugh (writer, 1903-1966)]; by descent to Maria Teresa D'Arms (nTe Waugh), (b.1938): lived at Ann Arbor, Michigan and London) until February 1985; acquired from Maria Teresa D'Arms by the Yale Centre of British Art, New Haven in 1985
