Interpretation

Although drawn from a different angle, the decoration on this vase appears to be the same as on the vase at the feet of Andromache in the painting 'Captive Andromache' (c.1888, Manchester Art Gallery). The same figure of a woman in profile is visible. According to Ian Jenkins, the scene on this vase was "borrowed from a specific Attic red-figured hydria" in the British Museum (reference number E161) which depicts Menelaus, Helen and this unidentified figure.

Description

Outline tracing of a Greek decorated vase, viewed from above. A small amount of the decoration is visible on the left of the vase and shows a standing female figure in profile with her arms reaching towards another figure.

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
