Interpretation

This is a tracing of a drawing of the design for the interior of 44 Belgrave Square', London, by George Aitchison (architect, 1825-1910), at the Royal Institute of British Architects, Drawings Collection (reference number SB93/1). The similarity between drawings by Aitchison and Leighton for this project indicate that the two worked closely together and it is possible that this tracing was made by Aitchison.

Traced study for the group of three flamingos on the far right of the frieze designed for the staircase of No.44 Belgrave Square, London (1870, untraced).

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
