Interpretation

There are very few known studies for this work. A study in chalk for the composition at Leighton House Museum may be the drawing that this tracing was made from (reference number LHO/D/0625).

Description

Traced study for the composition of the painting 'Memories' (c.1883, private collection). The pose of the central figure is close to the pose in the finished painting, although here the eyes appear to be half-closed, whereas they are open in the finished work. The drawing is squared up.

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
