Interpretation

This tracing was probably made in the 1870s when Leighton was designing the composition of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to Peace' (1884-86, Victoria and Albert Museum).

Traced study for the central group of four female figures in the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to Peace' (1884-86, Victoria and Albert Museum). 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
