Interpretation

The pose of this figure is similar to that of the female figure in the painting 'At the Fountain' (c.1892, Milwaukee Art Museum) and also to a figure to the lower left of the painting 'The Daphnephoria' (c.1874-76, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight).

Description

Study of a standing female figure wearing classical drapery and holding a pitcher in the right hand. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
