Description

Two figure studies for the male figures carrying tripod censers in 'The Daphnephoria' (c.1874-76, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight). The male child on the right of this sheet does not correspond to any of the figures in the painting but the male child on the left holds the same pose, though reversed, as the male child in the centre of the group of three figures at the back of the procession. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
