Inscriptions: Inscribed lower left "hnephoria / 1876" in pencil. (This should read 'Daphnephoria', however the sheet has been cut down). Inscribed lower left "No 22" in pen and ink.

Description

Left of sheet: full-length study for one of the male figures carrying a tripod to the left of the painting 'The Daphnephoria' (c.1874-76, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight). Upper right of sheet: full-length study for another of the male figures carrying a tripod to the left of the painting. Lower centre of sheet: full-length study for a similar male figure. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
