Interpretation

This tracing is later than a similar squared up tracing at Leighton House Museum (reference number LHO/D/0663) and is more like the finished painting.

Description

Outline tracing for composition of the painting 'Captive Andromache' (1888, Manchester Art Gallery). The girl seen next to the female figure directly behind Andromache, partially obscured in the finished painting. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
