Interpretation

Leighton's first preparatory sketch for the composition of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' was carried out in the summer of 1869 (see Ormond, Richard, 'Leighton's Frescoes in the Victoria and Albert Museum', W. & J. Mackay, Chatham, 1975, p.6).

Description

Traced study for the composition of the left hand side of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). A number of the individual figures differ considerably to the finished work. The tracing is squared up. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
