Inscriptions: Inscribed lower right "no. 91 / 1887" in pen and ink. Inscribed within the image is "VRI / :ANN: JUBIL:I" in pencil, in the artist's hand.

Interpretation

Although a sculptor and a founder member of the Society of Medallists, this is the only design for a medal amongst Leighton's work.

Tracing for Leighton's design for the cover of the 'Royal Academy Jubilee Address' to Queen Victoria (1887, Royal Collection). 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
