Inscriptions: Inscribed lower centre "Marquands ceiling No. 10" in pencil. The sheet is squared up in pencil and numbered 1-17 from top to bottom and 1-11 from right to left. It is also divided in the centre with a line labelled 'Centre'.

Interpretation

This drawing depicts Terpsichore, the muse of dance.

Description

Traced full-length , nude study for the figure of Terpsichore, for 'The Marquand Ceiling' (c.1886, possible private collections). The outer outline of the drapery is also drawn in. The drawing is squared up. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
