Interpretation

The Dance' was one of two friezes on the theme of music and dance, produced for Stewart Hodgson's house at 1 South Audley Street, London. The decorative scheme for the house was designed by Leighton's friend, the architect George Aitchison. Both murals were removed to Leighton House Museum in the 1970s.

Description

Traced study for the composition of the painting 'The Dance' (c.1881-83, Leighton House Museum). The tracing is squared up in red ink. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
