Interpretation

In this tracing Leighton appears to have been working out the relative heights of the figures and the perspective of the oblique line of the procession.

Description

Traced study for the composition of the painting 'The Daphnephoria' (1874-76, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight). This drawing includes only the figures on the left of the composition. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
