Description

Left of the sheet: full-length study for the male figure to the right of the painting 'The Dance' (c.1881-83, Leighton House Museum). Right of sheet: full-length, faint study for the same figure. Unlike the pose in the finished painting, here the figure's right arm does not rest on his hip but is extended in front of him. 

Provenance

Purchased by Cecil French (artist and collector, 1879-1953); bequeathed to Fulham Public Libraries Committee (now the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham Libraries) by Cecil French in 1954; on long term loan to Leighton House Museum
