Interpretation

The scene depicts Eliezer on the right. He had been sent by Abraham to seek a wife for Isaac. He stopped near the well outside the city and declared that he would choose the first woman who would draw water for himself and his camels. Here, Rebekah is depicted carrying the water from the well.

Traced study for the illustration 'Eliezer and Rebekah' for 'Dalziel's Bible Gallery' (1880-81). 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
