Description

Traced study for the composition of a vignette or initial letter to Chapter I ('The Shipwrecked Sailor'), Book I for 'Romola' (1862-63). The tracing is reversed but otherwise similar to the finished illustration apart from the initial letter which Leighton later moved from the left corner to the right, above the figure of Tito, woken by Bratti, the merchant who stands over him. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
