Description

Half-length tracing of the female figure with a tiger, on the far right hand side of the painting 'The Syracusan Bride' (1865-66, private collection). The tracing is sketchy and the woman's face is not depicted but otherwise it is similar to the pose of the figure in the finished painting. (She pushes the lion down with the left hand) 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
