Tracings of female figures carrying pitchers, for two separate figures on the left hand side of 'Captive Andromache' (c.1886-88, Manchester Art Gallery). The tracing on the right shows a woman seen from the back carrying a jug on her head and holding her hands behind her neck. This is very close to the pose of the figure in the finished painting although there are minor differences in the drapery. However, the tracing on the left showing a woman holding a water jug by its handles to her right is reversed in the painting and the figure is partially hidden by another woman.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
