Inscriptions: Inscribed lower right "64" encircled, in pen and ink. Inscribed lower left "Daphnephoria 1876" in pencil. This sheet is squared up in red ink, with the squares running 1- 17 vertically and 1- 40 (in reverse) horizontally.

Description

Traced study for the composition of the painting 'The Daphnephoria' (1874-76, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight). There two extra figures in this composition which are not seen in the finished painting, a male figure bending down by the pillar on the right and a figure wearing a long cloak, on the far right. The tracing is squared up in pen and red ink. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
