Interpretation

A study for the figure in the British Museum (reference number 1897,0113.2), is inscribed with the name of the model 'Agostino'. Leighton made numerous similar studies for heads for the painting 'Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna...'.

Study for the head of the figure of Giotto seen at the centre of the painting 'Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna...' (c.1853-55, Royal Collection).
