Interpretation

A study of the head of the same figure is held at Leighton House Museum (reference number LHO/D/0951), which Leighton has labelled with the name of the model, Vincenzo. This nude study may have been made from the same model.

Description

Full-length nude study for the male figure, with head bowed, to the left of the painting 'The Reconciliation of the Montagues and Capulets...' (1853-54, private collection). Upper right of sheet: study of the figure's right elbow and forearm. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
