Interpretation

This drawing probably dates from the same time as Leighton's preparatory work for 'Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna...' (c.1853-55, Royal Collection) as the boy's pose is similar to figures in another drawing at the Royal Academy (reference number 04/488). Also, the model's hair and features are similar to those of the boy holding a processional cross on the far left of the painting.
