Interpretation

This drawing is probably an exercise in life-drawing. The model may be the same as seen in another life drawing, also at the Royal Academy (reference number 04/490).

Description

Full-length nude study of a standing male figure, in profile, facing to the right. The figure leans forward and to his left. The left arm reaches down. The back of the right hand rests on the right hip. His weight rests on the right leg and the left leg is in front of it. He has a moustache and short hair. The right leg is drawn in outline. Only the outline of the back of the left leg is shown and the left hand is not drawn.

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
