Description

Full-length study for the female figure, wearing orange, second from the right in the painting 'Captive Andromache' (c.1888, Manchester Art Gallery). This drawing differs from the painting as the left hand reaches forward to take a pot with a handle, and the figure looks forward at the pot. In the painting, she reaches forward to steady herself on the wall in front of her, whilst looking down into the well. Also, the heels are raised further from the ground as she stands on tip-toe and the pitcher, which her right hand rests on, is a different shape to that used in the final painting.

Provenance

Purchased from Julian Hartnoll (dealer) by Manchester City Art Gallery (now Manchester Art Gallery) in 1977.

Exhibition history

  • 19 November 1978 to 07 January 1979, 'Victorian High Renaissance', Manchester City Art Gallery (now Manchester Art Gallery)
