Interpretation

This drawing is inscribed "Sonnino". The town of Sonnino is in the province of Latina in Italy and is probably where this study was made.

Description

Full-length study of a standing female figure in contemporary Italian dress. She stands in profile facing to the left, with head turned towards to viewer. The left hand is held to her chest. She is dressed in a head dress, a long sleeved dress which comes down to the ankles, an apron and flat shoes. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society (Fine Art Society reference number N24, originally priced at ú0:10:0); one of 55 drawings purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum from the Fine Art Society for a total of ú135:18:0 (including a 10% discount) in 1896.
