Description
Upper left of sheet: study for the left arm and hand, resting on a post or handle, of the soldier to the left of the painting 'The Reconciliation of the Montagues and the Capulets...' (c.1853-55, private collection). Centre left of sheet: study of a left hand and wrist pointing to the ground, with fingers slightly bent and back of hand to the viewer. Probably a study for the left hand of Romeo seen to the right of the finished painting. Upper right of sheet: study for the left hand of the central figure dressed in blue and black in the final painting. Centre right of sheet: study of a right hand in profile with palm facing to the right. The thumb and index finger are extended, the other fingers slightly bent.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society (Fine Art Society reference number N60, originally priced at ú0:10:0); one of 55 drawings purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum from the Fine Art Society for a total of ú135:18:0 (including a 10% discount) in 1896.
