Description

Upper half of sheet: drapery study for the upper torso and arms of the king seen on horseback to the right of the painting 'Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna...' (c.1853-55, Royal Collection). The interlinked fingers holding the reigns and neck are also drawn. Lower half of sheet: drapery study for an arm (probably the right arm) drawn from shoulder to wrist. The arm is held out straight but away from the body. To the right of this and drawn horizontally across the page is another drapery study for a straight arm (probably the left arm) and part of the shoulder. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society (Fine Art Society reference number R6, originally priced at ú4:4:0); one of 55 drawings purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum from the Fine Art Society for a total of ú135:18:0 (including a 10% discount) in 1896.
