Inscriptions: This drawing was made during Leighton's visit to Algiers in the autumn of 1857. There are five similar drawings made on the same trip in the collection at Leighton House Museum (reference numbers LHO/D/0972-4 and LHO/D/0976-7).

Description

Upper left of sheet: study of the head of a hooded male figure, facing slightly to the left. Upper centre of sheet: study of the head of a hooded male figure, in profile to the left. Lower centre of sheet: very faint full-length study of a camel. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society; one of 55 drawings purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum from the Fine Art Society for a total of ú135:18:0 (including a 10% discount) in 1896
