Inscribed lower right "Project" on pencil. Inscribed on reverse, lower right "2268 LXXIV". Stamped on reverse, lower left "[illegible]" encircled.
Drapery study for the standing male figure, second from the left in the painting 'Music' (c.1883-85, Leighton House Museum). The legs of the figure have also been drawn in and the head is lightly sketched.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; presented to the National Museum and Gallery, Cardiff by Sir William Goscombe John (sculptor, 1860-1952) in 1939.
