Interpretation

This study is unusually tall for Leighton's drawings of this time.

Description

Study for the composition of the illustration 'Death of the First Born' for 'Dalziel's Bible Gallery'. The three smaller compositions below the main illustration are also included. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); collection of Douglas Freshfield; sold through Christies (auctioneers) on 02 November 1934 (lot 32); presented to the Athenaeum by D. R. H. Williams in 1934
