Drawing details

Title: Study for 'Phryne at Eleusis': Female Figures
Date: c.1882
Media: Pencil on white paper
Location: Royal Academy of Arts, London
Reference number: 06/2264
Inscriptions: Inscribed along upper edge "Heortologie[?] - Aug. [illegible] / Leipzig" in pencil, in the artist's hand.

Interpretation

The only legible part of the inscription on this page is "Leipzig", a town in Germany. This page is from a sketchbook at the Royal Academy (reference number 06/2264).

Description

Page from a sketchbook. Left of sheet: study for the female figure in the painting 'Phryne at Eleusis' (c.1880-82, untraced). Rather than holding fabric, as in the painting, the hands seem empty. Also, the left hand is held out the right and not over the top of the head, like the painted version. Right of sheet: study for a standing female figure facing the artist and dressed in a long cape.
