Interpretation

This study may have first been drawn as a study for the painting 'Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna...', as it features in the centre of the background of the work, completed in 1855. However, the study was also used in the 1860s as the setting to a small vignette illustration to George Elliot's novel 'Romola'.
