Interpretation

As the finished work is untraced the only clues to its appearance are the studies which survive at Leighton House Museum and The Royal Academy of Arts. This study shows the figure of Samson, blind and losing his balance, after his hair has been cut off. In the painting he was supported by a male figure to his immediate left. This model looks very similar to a model Leighton drew during life drawing classes at the Kensington Life Academy in c.1859.

Description

Half-length nude study for the figure of Samson in the painting 'Samson and Delilah' (c.1858, untraced). The figure faces the viewer, but the shoulders are twisted to the right, and the right arm reaches across the body. He has a beard, moustache and thinning hair. His eyes are closed and he is frowning. The right hand has not been drawn.

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
