Upper centre of sheet: full-length study for the figure of Paolo in the painting 'Paolo and Francesca' (c.1860-61, Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad). The figure of Francesca is also very roughly sketched in. Lower right of sheet: half-length study for the lower half of the figure of Paolo. Lower left of sheet: full-length study for the figure of Paolo. The right leg and left knee have been drawn twice is slightly different positions. The figure of Francesca is also indicated.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Mrs. Emilie Isabel (Russell) Barrington (author and painter, 1844-1933); presented to Leighton House Museum in c.1897
