Interpretation

Leighton worked in this sketchbook as a child of about 14 or 15 years old. In a short biography published soon after Leighton's death, George C. Williamson explains that as a child Leighton was 'a clever sketcher, constantly illustrating in his sketch-book [sic] the stories that took his attention, and doing them with a minuteness of detail and a fineness of stroke which were extraordinary in one so young.' [Williamson, George C. 'Frederic Lord Leighton' George Bell & Sons, 1902, p.2]
