Interpretation

Leighton was a close friend of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and her husband Robert Browning. When Elizabeth died in 1861 he designed her tomb at the Campo Santo Cemetary in Florence. Leighton's biographer Alice Corkran noted that his design for a medallion for her tomb was initially modelled by in clay: "Leighton had done memorable work in clay ... He had designed a medallion to the monument of Mrs. Barrett Browning, marking her resting place in the Protestant Cemetary at Florence..." In fact, Leighton designed the entire tomb and most of the surving drawings are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
