Interpretation

Published in the Cornhill Magazine in December 1860, this illustration accompanied a poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning entitled 'Ariadne at Naxos'. The composition is similar to Leighton's last painting 'Clytie' (1895-96, private collection).
