Witnesses

When you get married or form a civil partnership, you must have two witnesses to sign the marriage or civil partnership schedule. Anyone can be a witness, as long as they understand what they’re witnessing.

We recommend your witnesses can speak English and are of an age to understand the meaning and purpose of the marriage and civil partnership ceremony. However, this is not set in law. Your witnesses do not need to bring ID.

We ask for your witnesses' names on the ceremony choices form but if your witnesses change you do not need to notify us. You can let us know on the day of your ceremony.

Although Registrars can't act as witnesses, we've partnered with Kensington and Chelsea’s Library Service to provide professional, friendly and presentable witnesses. The fee for two witnesses is £150. To book, please email the Library Service at [email protected]
