Interpretation

This is a study of Leighton's favourite model, Dorothy Dene, who posed for the figure of Andromeda in the painting 'Perseus and Andromeda' (c.1891, The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool).

Description

Full-length drapery study for the figure of Andromeda in the painting 'Perseus and Andromeda' (c.1891, The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool). The nude figure of Andromeda and the rock she stands on are also lightly indicated. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (nTe Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (nTe Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, London by Matthews and Orr in 1896
