Interpretation

Leighton died before even starting work on this series of four painted panels. His design for them is known only through a few preparatory studies, three of which are in the collection at Leighton House Museum (reference numbers LHO/D/0783, LHO/D/0787 and LHO/D/0746). It was an ambitious project as each canvas measured approximately 320cm high and 132 wide. Correspondence between Leighton and the client, Mrs. Enriqueta Rylands, survives in the collection of the John Rylands Library in Manchester.
