Dear Signor
Many thanks for both notes. What is 72?? This note conveys not only warm wishes for, but expectation of 'many happy returns of the day'. I shall certainly apply to Agnew as you direct but were the three Goddesses not in Paris in 78?
Let me tell you why I wanted to know about your Joachim (the matter was so far of course personal to myself) A committee has been formed to do something to celebrate the 50th year of dear old Joe's public life. They are doing great things in Germany; we want to do something; we heard of a violin worth a small fortune but the owner won't sell. The Germans are getting up a large money subscription but we don't like the idea. The alternative (to the fiddle) of a portrait was suggested - & I thought at once of your splendid picture - & wrote privately what you read. I am in despair, is the picture already made over? This would be really a worthy use for it.
In haste
Yours affec

Are you at work again?
The darkness is hampering me sorely.
