Description | Joseph Chamberlain (1836-1914) attired in Elizabethan doublet and hose examines three boxes sitting on an altar, inscribed with the labels ‘White Labour’, ‘Black Labour’ and ‘Yellow Labour’. The female figure of Portia attired in an elaborate dress inscribed with the name‘SOUTH AFRICA’ stands to the right and looks on. In the background hangs a profile portrait of a Doge. On reverse; a pencil sketch of two clowns and a gentleman. |
