DescriptionArtist's proof engraving on paper. Mr Punch stands at the prow of a Grecian galleon, dressed classical robes and wearing a laurel wreath he plays an aulos. His likeness is carved into the figurehead of the boat which is full of muses of progress such as ‘SCIENCE’ and ‘KNOWLEDGE’ depicted female figrues in classical dress. An old man (Father Time) with flowing white beard and oar sits near the stern. Four dishevelled women, labelled with words such as ‘POVERTY’ AND ‘ANARCHY’, are in the water. A vulture labelled ‘WAR’ sits on the tiller whilst a dove flies behind.
