DescriptionArtist's proof engraving on paper. Drawing depicting the diminutive Bernhard, Prince von Bülow (1849-1929) in military uniform trying to wrestle the large bogeyman of socialism into a box inscribed 'SOCIALIST JACK IN THE BOX'. Affixed to the upper left of the drawing is a small print of a similar but earlier cartoon by Sambourne depicting Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898) wrestling a smaller bogey-man of socialism into a box inscribed 'SOCIALIST JACK IN THE BOX', with the printed caption 'KEEPING IT DOWN!' and 'PUNCH-SEPTEMBER 28, 1878'.
