Dear Stewart
Our friend Mrs Mason is very anxious - indeed obliged owing to an unexpected circumstance, to make if possible a little sum of money & wishes to sell an early picture of George's that remains to her - an Italian subject, two girls at a fountain at which a man has brought two horses to drink; do you remember it? It is, without the frame (for it has none) I suppose about two feet long - and I should say sixteen inches high. She would like to get £150 for it. Of course if it were one of his English subjects it would be worth double that - or nearly. Now what can we do my dear Stewart? Do you know of anyone who would be willing to buy it? Would you care to do so yourself, or [?Kirkman]? or any of your friends? That you will help if you can I know d'avance. A dealer would be sure not to want to buy because she wants to sell. He would see his opportunity to beat her down.
Remember me very kindly to Mrs Hodgson and give my love to Ruthie.
Yours always sincerely
Fred Leighton
