It sometimes happens that a busy man postpones, more or less unavoidably, a simple act till it loses all manner of grace, and I fear you will say that it is so with me in refraining till now expressing to you my very sincere congratulations on the wide and very merited success of your most pleasant book which I read - sometime ago, indeed - from cover to cover; embracing as they do so large an area of time and space and cast, as they are, in so bright and attentive a form your reminiscences form very interesting as well as most enjoyable reading. At least to those who personally recall so much that is set down on your pages. Let me not close without acknowledging your recent kindly allusions to your very old friend
