Dear Lehmann
Your letter finds me, you see, in Italy or you should have been answered sooner. I have not myself seen Cartwright and tho' I heard from him the other day he said nothing of himself; but I have seen Hillmann who is here, as is also Wanda le Strange (Cartwright's daughter) and both, I grieve to say, give a very bad account of him, both, in fact evidently thoroughly doubt his strength enabling to go thro' another - and still less a possible third ordeal; he seems to have borne his first operation with amazing pluck - (he took no chloroform!) but he is old for such trials and has not recovered his strength. It is very sad. I hope you are flourishing; remember me kindly at home and believe me
Sincerely yours
Fred Leighton
